It is hard to believe that, in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the English were thought to have been extraordinarily beautiful and always at it. They were the Brazilians of Europe. What went wrong? Old England was an astonishingly erotic place. Young couples used to do their courting in bed; the girl was sewn into a “bundling sack” so that (in theory) they could only have “outercourse”. In the eighteenth century it was common wives to be sold or auctioned – the usual price was one shilling – while both men and women attended spanking clubs. And did you know that, if a widow remarried nude, her husband did not inherit her debts? London was awash with brothels and bagnios, while highly trained English prostitutes were in demand worldwide. In the Restoration obscene shows were a staple of the theatre, while in Victorian times women regularly had their virginity renewed. If you think that the British are uptight and prudish when it comes to sex, think again. England’s ancestors were intent on having a good time.
